        History

Everard Philip Lempriere was an English administrator, private secretary, and amateur naturalist best known for his contributions to the ornithological study of Southeast Asia. He served as private secretary to the Earl of Kintore, Governor of South Australia, and also worked in the same capacity for Governor Robinson. During an extended posting in Borneo and travels throughout the region, including southern Palawan, he amassed a significant collection of zoological specimens. These were sent to his friend, the distinguished British ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe, in England. Several new species were subsequently described from Lempriere’s collections by Sharpe and other taxonomists, and a number of them were named in his honour, commemorating his contributions to natural history.
