        Flora Gardiner Kling was a historical figure from Mt. Vernon, Indiana, known for her family lineage and her presence in early 20th-century American art and literature circles. Historical archives show that she was a correspondent of the legendary author Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), with letters from her to Clemens dating back to November 1905 archived in the Mark Twain Project at UC Berkeley. In 1915, the renowned American wood engraver Timothy Cole designed a highly regarded, custom bookplate (ex libris) for her. The artwork famously depicted a roaring Niagara Falls with a sweeping rainbow. Copies of this bookplate are preserved today in prestigious archival locations, including Yale University's Bookplate Collection and the Digital Public Library of America.
