Jules de Joannis was a prominent French entomologist and naturalist from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He specialized heavily in Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies), particularly the small, elusive species often called microlepidoptera. He extensively cataloged and described numerous species of butterflies and moths. His taxonomic research often involved correcting classifications and studying the insect fauna of Europe and Africa (including regions like the Sahara and Madagascar). He worked closely with his brother, L. de Joannis, and frequently collaborated with or curated specimens alongside other major naturalists of his era, such as E-L Ragonot.
