Jameson, Ethel Durand
Ethel Jameson (née Durand) was the widow of James S. Jameson (1856-1888), the Scottish-Irish naturalist, zoologist, and heir to the Jameson whiskey fortune. Jameson served as the official naturalist of Henry Morton Stanley's ill-fated Rear Column during the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition of 1887. After enduring extreme hardships in the Congo, he succumbed to malaria in 1888, and his reputation was subsequently damaged by a major Victorian-era press scandal surrounding allegations about his conduct during the expedition.
In response to public accusations made by Stanley against her late husband, Ethel Jameson sought to restore his reputation. To this end, she collected and edited his field journals and correspondence, publishing them as The Story of the Rear Column of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition (1890), thereby presenting Jameson's own account of the expedition and defending his legacy.
