James Albert Eccles was born on June 17, 1887, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

He was a leading Canadian business executive and philanthropist who attended Harvard University. In 1910, he moved to Montreal, Quebec. He became a president and chairman of the board of Imperial Industries of Canada and Harris, Forbes & Co., Ltd., Investment Bankers; a vice-president of Bond Dealers' Association of Canada, and Secretary-Treasurer of Harvard Club of Montreal. He was a member of the University Club of Montreal, St. James's Club, Royal Montreal Golf Club, and Mount Bruno Country Club.

He married Mary McGibbon Southam. He died on March 3, 1960, in Montreal, Quebec.
