General order no. 574, Horse Guards

General order of the British Army's Forces in North America no. 574, Horse Guards. The order is a collection of reports related to a fire that destroyed the Saint Roch suburb of Quebec City on 28 May 1845. In addition to the introductory report from the Duke of Wellington (Commander-in-Chief) and John Macdonald (Adjutant-General) the general order includes reports and messages from James A. Hope (Major General of the Troops in Canada), C.A. Wetherall (Colonel and Deputy Assistant General), R.E. Caron (Mayor of Quebec City), H. Garneau (clerk, Quebec City Registrar's Office), J.M. Higginson (Civil Secretary's Office), P.W. Walker (Lieutenant Colonel Royal Artillery), W.C. Ward (Lieutenant Colonel Royal Engineers), F.X. Garneau (Secretary for a public meeting of the citizens of Quebec), and Sister St. Antoine (Superior, Convent of the Hotel Dieu of Quebec).

In addition to the introductory report from the Duke of Wellington, Commander-in-Chief, and John Macdonald, Adjutant-General, the general order includes reports and messages from Cathcart (Lieutenant General, Commander of the Forces), James A. Hope (Major-General), J.M. Higginson (Civil Secretary's Office), F.J. Griffin (Captain), T.F. Garneau (Quebec City Clerk Office), and E.L. Montizambert (Secretary General Comittee).

Two general orders of the British Army's Forces in North America that are related to two fires that occurred in Quebec City on 28 May 1945 and 28 June 1845. The general orders contain reports detailing the sequence of events leading up to and during the fires, as well as the actions of the soldiers fighting the fires, and the damaged caused by the flames. The orders also include messages of thanks to the soldiers and their commanding officers from community leaders. Major-General James A. Hope was in command of the soldiers at Quebec City and submitted the reports to the Commander-in-Chief, the Duke of Wellington.
