Part of James Forbes Zoological Drawings
Item consists of a colour illustration of a cobra next to a patch of white lilies. The figures have been cut and pasted onto sheet with background details drawn in. The caption identifies the species as "Coluber naja," according to the Linnean system. The rest of the caption reads: "Cobra de Capello, or Hooded Snake of Hindostan: this is one Dancing Snakes, of a small size, drawn from the life at Bombay, a few hours before it killed a young woman." An additional pencil annotation by Henry Mousley identifies the species as "Naia tripudians."
