Francis J. Shepherd Fonds

Fonds consists of a scrapbook of clippings of Shepherd’s articles, reviews, editorials and letters to the editor of medical journals (1869-1929), clipped obituaries from the British Medical Journal and a fragmentary autobiography to 1875. Biographical or autobiographical notes and a report on a visit to European medical schools in 1887 were probably compiled by Shepherd (ca 1920-1924) as they are written on the backs of his incoming personal letters.

Fonds consists of original files and printed materials falling into two themes. The larger of the two concerns Pavlasek’s work on the Superior Council of Education (1967-1972). Correspondence, notes and minutes deal with the establishment of the Université du Québec, the organization of a Council of universities, and legislation regarding capital funding of universities. The McGill Senate is the subject of the second group, comprising correspondence, minutes, reports and submissions from 1963 to 1971.

The fonds consists of mostly administrative functions. Organized by year of its donation to McGill. It consists of the club’s constitution, correspondence, financial statements, bonds, annual dues, cash receipts, minutes, speeches, photographs, pamphlets. Invitations, meetings, lists of committee members, speakers, annual reports. These represent the main functions of the organization and its members.

The content ranges from low level administration such as the meeting minutes and invitations to high level administration functions such as financial reports and bonds. These illustrate the daily function of the club in organizing meetings and luncheons at hotels, as well as correspondence with members. There are photographic materials of speakers at the luncheons.
