Fonds contains the log of the H.M.S. Bellerophon kept during a voyage from Spithead, England, to Italy and the Aegean. Inscription on front flyleaf: "Log of the proceedings of H.M.S. Bellerophon 18 Guns, R. L. Baynes Esq. CB Capt. Commencing October 7th, 1840 and ending April 21st, 1850. Kept by John P. Gardiner, Naval Cadet and Midshipman.
These are various business papers of Simon McTavish and include partnership agreements with William and Duncan McGillivray, William Hallowell, Roderick McKenzie, Angus Shaw and James Hallowell, 1806 and drafts of agreement for seven years between McTavish, Frobisher and Company and John Fraser of London, Simon McGillivray and John Tullon, 1805.

His professional life is reflected in files on naval affairs, 1894-1937, and in an extensive series of political papers including general correspondence and subject files, 1905-1946; material relating to committees, 1904-1930; and political 'forecasts', 1900-1945. Literary interests are revealed by notes on Sir John Fisher, 1915, and H.G. Wells, 1932-1934. Some books from Bellairs' library, with his annotations, are included in his papers.
