The fonds illustrates Dr. Elliott's work as a neurochemist and consists of correspondence, letters, articles, newspaper clippings, photographs, slides, research material and notes, course material, manuscripts, typescripts. The fonds is divided into seven series.
Elliott, K. A. C. (Kenneth Allan Caldwell), 1903-1986
Series A contains Dr. Elliott’s research notebooks from his association with Selwyn College, Cambridge, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Montreal Neurological Institute. Some of this research was collaborative. Most of the series comprises research relating to the study of brain trauma as a result of head injury or neurosurgery. This series is divided into three (3) sub-series: A/1) Research (experiment) notebooks, 1927-1933 A/2) Research (experiment) notebooks, 1933-1949 A/3) Research (experiment) notebooks, 1944-1957
Sub-series A-1 contains experiment notebooks from the Chemistry Laboratory, Cambridge, concerning the study of stereochemistry. Of special relevance are the experiments pertaining to the optical activity caused by the restriction of the rotation of a trivalent nitrogen atom. It includes material produced at the Sir William Dunn Institute of Biochemistry related to oxidation reduction systems with particular relevance to the reduction of glutathione and the study of peroxidases in milk and horseradishes. This sub-series is comprised of 4 files (files no. 1 to 4), which are arranged chronologically.
Typescript of “The Haematin Content of Horseradish Peroxidase” by K.A.C. Elliott and D. Keilin (c. 1933). Includes correspondence between Dr. Keilin and K.A.C. Elliott, concerning revision, a copy of referee’s report, and manuscript research notes on peroxidises in milk and horseradishes.
Sub-series A-2 contains experiment notebooks from the Graduate School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, concerning the measurement of peroxidase activity of animal tissues, the activity of the “succinoxidase system” and the effects of redox indicator dyes on metabolism. Includes experiments related to the aerobic and anaerobic metabolism of glucose, lactate, pyruvate and succinate by slices of tumor tissues using manometric, analytical and isolation procedures. This sub-series comprises 29 files (files nos. 5 to 33), which are arranged chronologically.
Manuscript research notebook concerning manometric experiments with special relevance to succinoxidase research in normal and tumor tissues. Loose manuscript notes are included.
