Confederation of Canadian Unions

This sub-series documents the Confederation of Canadian Unions (CCU) / Confédération des syndicats canadiens (CSC), a federation of independent Canadian labour unions founded in 1969 by Madeleine Parent and Kent Rowley. An aim of the federation was to subvert the influence of American-based international unions on Canadian labour movements.
Included are various records related to the CCU's conventions, national executive board meetings, and the CCU's policies and constitution. There are also several files on Canadian union members, including the Canadian Textile and Chemical Union, the United Oil Workers of Canada, the Sudbury, Mine, Mill and Smelters Workers Union, and the Canadian Association of Industrial Mechanical and Allied Workers, among others. Moreover, the sub-series contains issues of Canadian Union News, Confederation of Canadian Unions Bulletin, C.T.C.C. Le Travail, and the CAIMAW review.

Agendas and notes

This sub-series contains agendas, address books, and telephone books kept by Madeleine Parent. Agendas detail contacts, appointments, and reminders, including entries related to her activities for the Canadian Textile Council (CTC), Canadian Textile and Chemical Union (CTCU), Confederation of Canadian Unions (CCU), and various union locals, as well as plans with family and friends. The telephone books are notebooks that Parent used to list contacts, when to call, affiliations, and what she needed to communicate to the person.
Also included are several files of Parent's notes kept for various purposes, including speeches and writings, on a wide range of topics, such as unions, women's activism, and human rights. There are five topical files of notes on her trip to China (including an album on Norman Bethune), the Hanahan hearing, federal police surveillance, and a history lecture for the Université de Montréal (L' UdeM). There are also materials related to the L’UdeM lecture in sub-series A4 (Research, writings, and interviews).

Conferences

This subseries contains documentation related to conferences, workshops, and seminars held at various institutions, including at the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) and McGill University. Also included are photographs and slides related to some of these events.

This subseries contains research files and writings by William Feindel on the topic of neurology. Included are research and papers by various authors. The most prominent topics covered are the brain and mind, the amygdala, and red veins.

Research, writings, and interviews

This sub-series documents Madeleine Parent's speeches, writings, and interviews. Materials include drafts and research files on various activist topics. Files indicated as 'research files' in the file inventory were topical materials that Parent gathered and kept. The archivist identified these as 'research files' for clarity for the finding aid. Also included are several audio recordings of lectures and speeches from the early 1980s by Parent and writings by other individuals sent to Parent, some of which she annotated. Examples of this include student papers on textile workers and a file of responses from CEGEP students on the topic of Parent's visit to their class. Also among this material are four files regarding an unpublished 1980 biography on Parent, including drafts for some chapters.
The sub-series also contains transcripts, notes, and agreements for interviews, including an interview conducted by Nicole Lacelle in 1987 and the CBC in 1996. There is a file of various biographical information on Parent likely created and kept for interviews. Finally, there are also files of articles about Parent and on various topics.

Dominion Textile Company Limited

This sub-series relates to the Canadian Textile Council's (CTC) activities while serving as the union for Dominion Textile Company Limited workers and its affiliate Montreal Cottons Limited. Some of the materials document the conflict between the American-based United Textile Workers of America (UTWA) and the Canadian led CTC after workers elected to leave the UTWA for the CTC.
Materials consist of collective agreements, including those with other unions pre and post the CTC. There are files on the 1952 strike at Quebec plants and files on a 1960s dispute at the Ste Anne Mill in Quebec. Moreover, there are a few files on the process and challenge the CTC faced in applying for certification to represent Dominion Textile Company Limited workers. Note that there are related materials to Dominion Textile in the United Textile Workers of America series (B) until the founding of the CTC in 1952.

St. Lawrence sugar refineries

This subseries contains records related to J.W. McConnell’s involvement in St. Lawrence sugar refineries between 1912 and 1977.

Material in this subseries includes federal and provincial income tax statements and annual statements, and minute books of the executive and general meetings.
