Quebec regional food research

The subseries are composed primarily of ephemera and research notes collected or created during Julian Armstrong travels in various Quebec regions during research food and foodways. The earliest file is from her 1986 trip to Jonquière for a French language immersion experience, to which she credits her inspiration to travel Quebec regions for research. Files include brochures about and/or published in various regions in Quebec, largely related to agro-tourism and food production; business cards and pamphlets from restaurants, bakeries, and food producers; correspondence with chefs and proprietors, often with recipes attached; clippings; and Armstrong's travel or itinerary notes. Some of the largest files are related to Charlevoix, the Eastern Townships, Lanaudière, and Gaspé.

Food research files

This series contains research files compiled by Armstrong during the course of her food research. The files primarily represent multiple visits to Quebec towns and regions. The series is divided into two subseries: (1) Quebec regional food research and (2) Food research subject files. The files in the first subseries are composed primarily of ephemera and research notes collected or created during her travels in various Quebec regions during research food and foodways. These include brochures about and/or published in various regions in Quebec, largely related to agro-tourism; business cards and pamphlets from restaurants, bakeries, and food producers; correspondence with chefs and proprietors, often with recipes attached; clippings; and Armstrong's travel or itinerary notes. Some of the largest files are related to Charlevoix, the Eastern Townships, Lanaudière, and Île d'Orleans.The second subseries contains research materials, notes, correspondence, conference presentations, ephemeral publications, etc. on specific topics, such as "Maple Syrup Pie" and "Cheese" or from particular conferences or events (such as "Culinary Historians Conference, May 2009").

The series also contains a small amount of material pertaining to conferences attended and general cooking ephemera collected by Armstrong, such as loose recipes.

Eastern Townships clippings

File contains clippings and photocopies of clippings related to the Eastern Townships chiefly from The Gazette, Brome County News, the Townships Crossroads, National Geographic Traveler, Châtelaine, Vie en Estrie/Estrie Living Magazine, Touring, Sel & Poivre, and the New York Times.

Speech file, 2

File consists chiefly of handwritten and typescript speaking notes and lectures for talks on historical Quebec cuisine given to, among others, the Northern Bounty conference. Talk titles include "The Quebec sweet tooth" and "The rise of the printed word." Also included are research materials (including clippings) for talks and some correspondence.

File consists chiefly of handwritten and typescript speaking notes and lectures for speeches on Quebec cuisine given to, among others, the Northern Bounty conference on Canadian Cuisine and an International Association of Culinary Professionals workshop. Talk titles include "A taste of Quebec" and "The Quebec sweet tooth." Also included are research materials (including clippings, articles, and speech transcripts) for talks and some correspondence.

Eastern Townships near near

File contains tourist information about Eastern Townships villages located nearer to Montreal, including pamphlets for historical sites, tours, and agro-tourism. File also includes correspondence, often with recipes, contact information and business cards for restaurants and food producers. The file also contains some handwritten recipes. Also included are 3 photographs taken by Louise Abbott.

Eastern Townships/Estrie

File consists of records chiefly related to food and tourism in Estrie, including pamphlets from historical and tourist sites, such as the Abbaye de Saint-Benoit-du-Lac. File contains numerous correspondence, in particular with restaurant-owners and food producers in Hatley and Sutton, most often with recipes included. Many business cards for restaurants and food producers also included.

Quebec cuisine miscellaneous, 2008

File consists of records related to Quebec cuisine in general, including promotional material for a publication and Le Renaud-Cyr culinary award; print-out of article by Hélène Andrée Bizier on cipaille ("sea pie", or tourtière); contact information for food producers in the Eastern Townships; correspondence regarding an article on pâté chinois published by Robert Beauchemin in La Presse (2005); print-outs of recipes; print-outs of New York Times articles on Montreal; copies of articles from The Gazette; personal correspondence; and correspondence with Hélène Andrée Bizier and others regarding pâté chinois.

File consists of documents related to Millie's Diner in Stanstead, Quebec, including correspondence, notes, print-outs of articles on its chef, Bashar Shbibi, and handwritten recipes from the restaurant.
