Art scrapbooks

Subseries D consists of twelve scrapbooks compiled by Harold Spence-Sales which illustrate his artistic interests and pursuits. In the scrapbooks, Spence-Sales included photographs, printed pages featuring art and artworks, and some hand-drawn graphic materials.

Associations, correspondence, and collaborations

Subseries A consists of records related to Harold Spence-Sales activities within professional associations: the Ontario Professional Planners Institute, the Community Planning Association of Canada, the Corporation of Urbanites Quebec, the Quebec Society of Professional Town Planners, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the Town Planning Institute of Canada and the group Lambda Alpha International. Subseries A also encompasses records regarding events that Harold Spence-Sales attended. Events such as, McGill School Architecture, celebrations, award ceremonies as well as various professional conferences and lectures.

Audiovisual and artifacts

Subseries F consists of audiovisual records: cassette tapes, VHS tapes and DVD's that relate to Harold Spence-Sales life events and activities; birthday parties, reward receptions and exhibition projects that he worked on. The Exhibitions that the VHS tapes and DVDs relate to are, "Roof Tops" and "Touchlines"

Subseries F also contains some of Harold Spence-Sales personal artifacts: certificates from professional associations, professional stamps and a flag of his own design etc.

Correspondence

Subseries E consists of correspondence between Harold Spence-Sales and his family, friends and professional organizations. Subseries E also contains newspaper articles regarding issues in art and architecture.

Creative projects

Subseries C consists of records related to Harold Spence-Sales artistic interests. Subseries C contains photographs of sculptures, art pieces, nature and natural formations. Series C also contains drawings, sketches and printouts of images. Subseries C also includes records related to Harold's interest in music and horticultural activities.

Exhibitions

Subseries B consists of records related to Harold Spence-Sales interest in creating exhibitions.

Subseries B primarily consists of records related to Spence-Sales Exhibition; “Touchlines”. Harold Spence-Sales worked on developing the “Touchlines” exhibition from 1989-1991. The exhibition was displayed at Western Washington University from May 10 through July 30, 1992 . The topic of the “Touchlines” exhibition was to portray the common lands along the border between the United States and Canada and the people that pass through them.

In series 1 Subseries F: Audiovisual and artifacts there are several VHS cassette tapes that discuss the "Touchlines" exhibition.

Another Exhibition that is well represented in the fonds is the "Vancouver Parks" exhibition that Harold Spence-Sales worked on in 1988. All files in box C-97-64 are related to the "Vancouver Parks" exhibition in some way.

There are some files that clearly indicate that it contains records related to the "Vancouver Parks" exhibition based on the title. Any file that contains "Vancouver Parks" in the title may be related to the "Vancouver Parks" exhibition.

Family records

Subseries A consists of records that pertain to family events, home life and genealogy. It Includes many photographs of events such as birthday parties and weddings (possibly Harold Spence-Sales' and Mary Filer's wedding). Also includes photographs of the couple's early years together and their home art and sculpture collection.

Financial and administrative

Subseries A consists of financial records that pertain to Harold Spence-Sales professional activities; contracts, estimations for projects, service fees, business expenses, grants and business statements.

Subseries A also contains of records that are of an administrative nature that are unrelated to financial expenses but are related to professional responsibilities. Administrative records contain publicity materials, research, correspondence and various kinds reports that were sent to Harold Spence-Sales throughout the course of his work as an urban planner that he may not have directly contributed to.

General

Subseries E consists of other records that document Harold Spence-Sales professional relationships outside of work that are miscellaneous in nature and primarily relate to friends and colleagues in the field of architecture and urban planning.

Subseries E also contains six of Moshe Safdies binders. The binders are indexes of materials and supplies that Safdie used while working on projects. The binders also provide lists of where the records that Safdie created while working on projects is located. (Files 006-011).

Maps

Subseries C consists of maps that Harold Spence-Sales used to work on urban development projects but the ventures have not been identified. The cartographic materials in subseries C are comprised of printed and hand drawn maps.
