Correspondence & Personal Papers

Series Correspondence & Personal Papers contains private correspondence to, from, and between members of the Papineau Family, including letters, cards, and invitations from 1843 to 1943.

Correspondence with literary friends

The series of literary correspondence consists of letters exchanged between William Weintraub and Mavis Gallant (127 letters), Brian Moore (603 letters) and Mordecai Richler (210 letters). These constitute a major source for the study of three prominent Canadian writers in the last half of the twentieth century. In addition, there are copies of 280 letters from Weintraub to Moore and 123 copies of letters from Weintraub to Richler. While the Gallant correspondence dates primarily from 1980s with only 8 letters from 1950-1951, the Moore and Richler correspondence is continuous from the 1950s. This latter correspondence reveals the close involvement of Weintraub in the development of the work of both Moore and Richler.

Creative Work

This series mainly contains poetry written by Judith Fitzgerald, but also includes other work by her such as books she has edited, play scripts, and short stories. The files include drafts, annotated manuscripts, and copies of her published work. Notably, this series contains manuscripts and published copies of Rapturous Chronicles, Habit of Blues, and Given Names. This series is mostly located in Container 3, 6, and 7, with some files in Container 4 and 5. Some files in Series 1 and 5 also contain creative work (please see the file descriptions).
