Scrapbooks and notebooks

This series contains scrapbooks and notebooks created by McGill students, their families, and McGill student organizations between 1870 and 2001.

This series is described at the item level. Student scrapbooks contain photographs, newspaper clippings, and ephemera such as programmes and invitations that document the student’s life and studies while they were at McGill. Student notebooks contain drawings, notes, photographs, and reports created by McGill students as part of their coursework. Scrapbooks and notebooks of McGill student organizations contain schedules, notes, photographs, press clippings, programmes, and sketches related to the organizations’ activities.

Personal and Family Series

The personal and family series consist of files related to Herman "Jackrabbit" Smith Johannsen as well as Alice Johannsen's private papers.
Herman "Jackrabbit" Smith Johannsen files (Files 1-35) date from 1884 to 1987 and include honorary degrees, awards, newspaper clippings, newsletters, ski related files such as Ski Marathon, Ski Museum, and publications by Jackrabbit- a collection of small "Skiers' Books" and "Le systeme a deux cires Jackrabbit pour ski de fond". Files related to Norway consist of notes, photographs, correspondence and newspaper clippings. Part of the series is correspondence related to "Jackrabbit" such as incoming handwritten letters, birthday cards to "Jackrabbit", handwritten letters in Norwegian to Alice and her sister Peggy from "Jackrabbit" (some in Norwegian), handwritten and typed letters to "Jackrabbit" in Norwegian from Alice and and relatives in Norway, some photographs, and fan mail. Letters from relatives in Norway to Alice and other family correspondence is almost entirely handwritten.

Black and white and color photographs as well as some negatives (Files 36-48) ranging from 1913-1991, consists of pictures of "Jackrabbit", Alice, friends and family. Also included are a few black & white photographs of Ron Turnham.

Slides in color taken by Alice Johannsen deal mostly with her father whether it is the Ski Marathon, trips to Norway, or Jackrabbit's other events. These slides span from 1956 to 1988 (Files 718-735, 738). There are also slides of Alice in Mont Tremblant in 1964 (File 736), and slides of Alice and Ron Turnham during the Royal Visit in 1959 (File 737).

Alice Johannsen's daily diaries and appointment books are handwritten and date from 1935 to 1988 (Files 49-55).

Files related to Alice Johannsen's Beaconsfield residence and its construction span from 1948 to 1982 (Files 56-58). Files documenting Alice's hobbies and interests, such as budgies, designs, and souvenirs from Expo 1967 range from 1946 to 1985 (Files 62-66).

Personal papers range from 1911 to 1990 and include passports, birth certificate, ration books and invitation to the White House from Mrs. Kennedy (Files 71, 78-79). Present also is Alice's curriculum vitae, biography, correspondence regarding jobs not taken spanning from 1935 to 1989 (Files 81-83), wedding gifts correspondence and marriage articles from the years 1940 to 1946 (Files 81-68), Ron Turnham's curriculum vitae and will from 1975 to 1978 (Files 69-70). There are also files containing business cards, electoral lists from Mont St. Hilaire, driver's license, pension and health plan, and charitable contributions dating between 1971 and 1991 (Files 72-77).

Included in the series also are newspaper clippings about Alice and Alice's brother Robert Johannsen from the Years between 1937 and 1984 (Files 84-85).

Alice's involvement in various societies and organizations (The James McGill Society, Women's Associates of McGill, Sigma Xi, Lake Placid Historical Society, Adirondack Trail Improvement Society, Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing, The Viking Ski Club, Canadian Scandinavian Foundation) dates from 1925 to 1990 (Files 80, 86-101).

Alice's interest in traveling is shown in files with her handwritten reflections on trip to Norway, Switzerland, London, Grand Canyon and others (Files 102-115). These files date between 1935 and 1986. An interesting scrapbook from a tour to Norway and Sweden organized by Alice in 1938 is to be found in file 104.

Large part of this series form correspondence files ranging from 1915 to 1991. This is mostly personal correspondence with family and friends, and a small portion of official correspondence. The official correspondence deals mainly with subjects regarding "Jackrabbit", and also includes letters regarding Alice's entry in Who is Who in America, correspondence with Prime Minister P. E. Trudeau and McGill Alumni (Files 118-129). Some correspondence files also contain outgoing letters and notes by Alice, and photographs. Included are handwritten letters, some of which are in Norwegian, between Alice's mother and father and herself.

Alice's passion for writing is documented in several files dating between 1936 and 1954, containing mostly handwritten article and song drafts, notes and correspondence (Files 117, 130-144).

An important part of Alice Johannsen's personal series are files documenting her academic training. This consists mostly of her course notes and textbooks from Newark Museum Apprenticeship, correspondence, Carnegie scholarship documents, traveling exhibition notes, draft for British Museum Diploma Thesis, an original Bachelor of Science Diploma from McGill University, awards and honorary degrees. These files date from the years 1928 to 1981 (Files 145-169).

Scrapbooks, journals and address books

This series contains journals, scrapbooks and numerous agendas and address books belonging to both J.W. McConnell and his wife Lily. This series also includes an agenda used by Kathleen McConnell Laing. The material in this series dates between 1887 and 1960.

The journals written by J.W. McConnell and his wife were almost all started before a major trip (e.g. the Coronation trip taken in 1952) but do not contain detailed narratives and were never continued for any lengthy period. The notes and entries that were recorded discuss both business and personal/family observations. The many scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings and letters concerning J.W. McConnell’s business interests, accomplishments, the Montreal Star and family members. The McConnells also kept many articles and ephemera related to British Royal Family members and the McConnells’ involvement in Montreal society and fundraising efforts. There also exists a significant scrapbook compiled after J.W. McConnell’s death containing obituaries from Canadian and international newspapers.

Personal papers

The Personal papers series documents Madeleine Parent's family life, relationships she built as a labour organizer and activist, and writings. Although this series documents aspects of Parent's personal life, it includes substantial documentation on Parent's activist work and research interests.
Sub-series A1 (Education and awards) documents Parent's early and post-secondary education, awards, and honorary degrees from various Canadian institutions. The Family papers sub-series (A2) contains documents related to both her father's and mother's families and from both her marriages. Also included are materials related to the passing of her second husband, Robert Kent Rowley, keepsakes, and photographs of family and friends.
Sub-series A3 (Agenda and notes) consists of calendars and notebooks of Parent's appointments and affiliations with people, organizations, and unions, including the Canadian Textile Council and Canadian Textile and Chemical Union. Also included are notes that Parent kept on various subjects for different purposes. The notes relate to materials found in the Research, writings, and interviews sub-series (A4), which documents Parent's speeches and writings and contains research files on various topics. Also included are transcripts, notes, and agreements related to interviews Parent gave.
The final sub-series, entitled Personal correspondence (A5), contains correspondence and greeting cards, the bulk of which is from the 1990s to the early 2000s. However, there is also some correspondence from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Professional Activities Series

This series documents Alice Johannsen's activities as preservationist, conservationist, lecturer, member of various professional organizations and conservation groups, tour organizer, speaker and writer.

A large part of the series are files that document Alice's involvement in various conservation and interpretative associations (Association of Canadian Interpreters, that later changed its name into Interpretation Canada, Association quebecoise d'interpretation du patrimoine, Conseil consultatif de l'environnement, Conseil de la conservation de l'environnement and le conseil quebecois), (Files 281-353, 384). These files span from 1970 to 1990 and consist of information on annual workshops, minutes and agendas of meetings, reports, memoranda, Alice's notes, pamphlets, correspondence, financial statements, directories and membership lists, policies, bylaws and legislation, newsletters, journals, newspaper clippings, maps, and slides. This series also reflect Alice's interest in crafts (Files 354-355) and date between 1934 and 1976.

Alice participation in many naturalists societies is reflected in files from the following organizations; (Files 380, 383, 385-402) National Audubon Society, Morgan Arboretum Association, Nature Conservancy of Canada, Canadian Nature Federation, Catherine Trail Naturalist Club, Montreal Zoological Society and Friends of Rock Ridges Nature Trail. These files date between 1943 and 1989 and consist of correspondence, minutes and agendas of meetings, newsletters, reports, photographs and newspaper clippings. She was also involved in various interpretative plans for provincial parks, Lake Carmin (Lac Rouge) project from 1950 to 1982 (Files 403-415, 676), and outdoor folk museums in Scandinavia and Canada from 1936 to 1968 (Files 416-423). The files contain reports, brochures, correspondence, notes, newspaper clippings, and some files are documented by slides.

Alice Johannsen also organized a number of educational tours (Files 424-434) in Norway as well as tours in South America, mainly Galapagos, and also Ecuador, Peru, Columbia and the Andes. Some of the tours are documented by slides (Files 683-701). These files date between 1968 and 1985 and contain Alice's notes, pamphlets, correspondence and itineraries.

These files document Alice's involvement giving courses in zoology, biology, library and museum training and environment as well as extension courses to high school and university students, museum and camp group leaders, and also to the public. The files date from 1920 to 1970 and consist of notes, correspondence, pamphlets, maps and slides. Educational programs she herself organized or information she collected on such programs elsewhere documents her education activities (Files 435-470), 647-650, 714). The files from the years 1929 to 1981 consist of Alice's notes, correspondence, pamphlets, handouts, and some contain slides.

Alice Johannsen's role as a popular speaker is shown by numerous lectures and speeches on a variety of subjects to a wide range of audiences from small children, to high school and university students, members of various associations and societies, women's clubs and conferences (Files 471-571, 674, 739). The files ranging from 1928 to 1985 contain mostly Alice's handwritten notes as well as correspondence, and some of her lectures are accompanied by slides.

Alice also wrote and published a number of articles. Some of her drafts and published work are shown in this series (Files 572-596) including notes and correspondence and covering the years between 1936 and 1987. Her articles deal mainly with museum related subjects.

These Gault Estate administrative files consist mainly of correspondence, memoranda, news release, projects, reports and surveys, and Alice's notes dating between 1957 and 1981 (Files 597-605).

Alice also collected material on various nature subjects and created information files, 1892 to 1984. (Files 606-629).

Also part of this series are Alice's reel-to-reel tapes and some transcript documenting her museum activities and training courses from 1956 to 1969 (Files 630-646). The transcripts do not, however, correspond to the titles on the tapes.

Alice's photographic activities are documented by color slides. Some of the titles clearly indicate to which files they relate. Some, however, are slides dealing with various topics but it is not evident to which files they correspond. There are a number ofslides documenting life and activities in Mont St. Hilaire (File 651-666) dating from 1964 to 1984. Some slides from years between 1969 and 1975 show nature scenes, animal and plant life that could also be used for Alice's numerous speeches and lectures (Files 667-670, 677). Alice also lectured on the life in the Andes and Galapagos, Iceland, volcanoes, glaciers and earth that are all accompanied by slides (Files 678-682, 702, 705) from 1965 to 1985. Some slides ranging from 1961 to 1978 show parks (Gatineau Park, Mont Tremblant Park, Iles de la Madeleine and Algonquin Park) and others are general views of nature settings, chiefly in Normal America. (Files 396, 428, 509, 516, 534, 542, 553, 559, 563, 621 and 738).

Illustrations and illustrated reprints

This series contains the creator's illustrations, and some prints and reprints of articles using her material. Some of them are numbered in corresponding file books. The series also contains non-medical illustrations, such as a stained glass window design for the Royal Victoria Hospital, a menu, and charcoal sketches.

Personal and family records

This series contains personal and family records of the McConnells from 1898-ca1970.

Included in the records are copies of the McConnell family tree, household and property expenses (e.g. receipts and bills from landscaping companies, clothing and household furnishings retailers, employee pay stubs, and lists of household costs), a guestbook from Saran Chai, photographs of family vacations at Saran Chai and the McConnells’ Golden Wedding anniversary, individual portraits or scenes of J.W. and Lily McConnell and friends, films of McConnell family vacations in Canada and trip to England in the late 1930s), material from special events such as the wedding of Kathleen McConnell to Peter Laing, additional personal mementos such as passports and McConnell’s Hymnary, and Christmas cards.

Correspondence

This series contains personal correspondence, mostly addressed to J.W. McConnell, with some letters written by him. The letters date between 1898 and 1970.

Correspondence is organized by ‘bundle’ according to specific recipient/author of the letters or by theme (e.g. Condolence letters) and period of time. Correspondence from specific people include letters writen between J.W. McConnell and his wife Lily, letters from their children (Wilson, John, Kathleen, and David), as well as many friends, particularly members of the British aristocracy and military officers and servicemen. Subject-based bundles include condolence messeges, correspondence about a fire at the McConnell home in Val David, congratulatory messages about anniversaries and career advancements, and material related to society events and charitable work.

Photographs

This series is mainly composed of photographs relating to Jasper’s professional life, including portraits, group portraits with colleagues, and scenes from symposia, conferences, and award ceremonies. Some personal photographs, including portraits of family members, and scenes from ski outings and travel, are included as well (Container 10).
