Althea Douglas Fonds

The Althea Douglas fonds consists of her student papers, class notes, exams, her husband’s letters and newspaper clippings of Althea and her husband. Althea’s notebook with notes from Costume lectures, diagrams, clippings and a notebook mostly on courses given by Stephan Pater, director of the Department of English Dramatic Productions (1952-1958), programs of English Department of Drama (1945-1960), and J. Creighton Douglas’ class notes from English (1946-1947), engineering exams and notes (1952 and 1963) are part of the collection. Included are as well Cedric S. Douglas’ notebooks on history of education, chemistry, public health and psychology courses from the years 1912 to 1914, Phyllis Bridgette’s notes from Macdonald Teacher’s College from 1922 and Marjorie Bridgette’s nature study specimens from Normal School of Macdonald College from 1911 and 1912. Family descriptions with notes on the Douglas family and the family tree chart are in the collection. Non textual records consists of slides, photographs, Althea Douglas’ drawings of costumes, and photographs that Althea Douglas rescued from McGill Daily for the courses she gave in stage make-up.

The collection consists of autographed signed letters from multiple senders, representing authors, artists, politicians, and other figures from Canada and Europe. The letters were accumulated by the Rare Books and Special Collections unit of the McGill Library over many years and assembled into the collection.

The major record of the McGill Chapter's early years is a register containing members' signatures, 1911-1969, and minutes from 1912 to 1932; a second minute book covers the period 1960-1969. Approximately two-thirds of the papers are secretary's files from 1961 to 1978 containing membership lists, correspondence concerning prospective members, circular letters announcing meetings, and correspondence with the headquarters of AOA. There are also receipts for initiation fees from 1954 to 1969.

Noad's papers document his research, and to a lesser extent, his teaching of English and comparative literature. They comprise 1.5 m of binders containing notes, clippings, extracts, and bibliographies on literary topics, e.g. imaginary voyages, memoires, the gentleman in satire, "Ossian", the young Byron, Spanish literature. A few binders contain lecture notes for his courses. Unbound materials include research notes on Ugo Foscolo and 19th century Italian poetry, lecture notes for courses in 19th century English poetry, files of clippings on 19th and 20th century writers, and bibliography cards for Elizabethan through 18th century literature.

This collection consists of twelve documents concerning the settlement of the Algonquin and Nipissing First Nations at Oka, Quebec, some in Anishinaabemowin, 1831-1853. There are also letters and documents mostly addressed to N. O. Greene, a solicitor and activist, concerning the Indigenous communities of Oka, 1878-1880.
