Documents, and poetry archives, late 1960s to mid-1990s

Series B contains a collection of documents, poetry archives, and memorabilia from the Montreal poetry scene of the late 1960s to the early 1980s, photographs and documents up to 1996, and records related to two poetry magazines. The three boxes of documents and literary archives relating to the Montreal poetry scene contain: audio and video tape recordings of poetry readings; photographs by Stephen Morrissey including colour slides and black and white photographs of poets giving readings and colour photographs of poets; a collection of poetry magazines; posters for poetry readings, and information on poets handed out at their readings; broadsides of poems, from the mid-1960s to the mid-1980s; and items from the 1990s. There is one box of files for two magazines that Stephen Morrissey edited and published, what is and The Montreal Journal of Poetics, between 1973-1985.

Booklets and Brochures

The booklets and brochures in the Roy States Collection are distributed among several of its series, but in most cases the booklets are part of either Series B or Series C. This distribution reflects the two initial stages of the arrangement of the collection after it was donated to Rare Books and Special Collections. In the first stage, most of the booklets and brochures were uncatalogued. A few were boxed together as miscellaneous materials, but many were placed in individual envelopes or folders, were given individual identification codes, and were listed in the printed finding aid for the collection. In the second stage, some of the booklets with identification codes were catalogued individually; these items are now part of Series B. Most of the remaining booklets, as well as the majority of the brochure-type materials, form Series C.

Subject files

This series contains subject files related to Noel Noel-Buxton's political activities and interests, dating from between roughly 1880 and 1950. The records chiefly concern British politics, and the UK's involvement in world politics, including the First and Second World Wars, Anglo-German relations, the Balkans, Indigenous sovereignty and the treatment of Indigenous populations, the governance of colonies, slavery, refugees, and famine and poverty in Europe after the Second World War. Also includes several files related to Buxton's religious and political beliefs and Paycockes House, a historic 15th century home in Essex that Buxton purchased and restored.

The arrangement of the series reflects the structure of the fonds when it was described by McGill archivists. This may reflect the original order or may be an arrangement that was introduced by Professor H. N. Fieldhouse, who acquired the fonds for McGill and spent many years conducting research in it. Files contain a variety of document types, including reports, notes, correspondence, publications, newspaper clippings, and volumes of parliamentary debates.
