Letter to Arnold Carl Klebs, January 31, 1913

Letter to Arnold Carl Klebs from William Osler, 13, Norham Gardens, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. Will send the medal (Arloing memorial) on to Jacobs. Relating the last meeting of the Historical section, he mentions Crawfurd's paper on the Italian Plague Banners. Mentions that he had been elected President of the Bibliographical Society. Explains that he feels a bit timid in front of those professional bibliographers. Invites him to one of their meeting and to their Colophon Club dinner. About Baltimore, explains that it has always been difficult to get an audience for the lecture on the History of Medicine. Billings sometimes had a scant attendance. Sends him the obituary notice of Fletcher.

Letter to Arnold Carl Klebs, March 12, 1913

Letter to Arnold Carl Klebs from William Osler, 13, Norham Gardens, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. He does not have the catalogue of Halle (Munich) to which Klebs refers. Almost glad about it as he mentions that he has been very busy, and he is nearly ruined. He is getting a collection of photographs for his paper at the congress on incunabula up to 1480.

Letter to Arnold Carl Klebs, February 20, 1915

Letter to Arnold Carl Klebs from William Osler, 13, Norham Gardens, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. Explains that the attitude is exactly the same that which they take in England, pretending that the behaviour of the Germans and the writings of the professoriate are the stigmata of a pronounced degeneracy. Says that it is hopeless to expect that they can agree on the subject, and proposes not to discuss it. Asks him to let them know when he will come to England. Mentions that they had a splendid meeting at the Historical Section of the Royal Society of Medicine, about Astruc on whom Alexander Simpson of Edinburgh read a paper. Glad that Cushing is coming to Paris.

Letter to Arnold Carl Klebs, November 14, 1917

Letter to Arnold Carl Klebs from William Osler, 13, Norham Gardens, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. Thanks for his letter of sympathy. It is a consolation that Revere fell into the hands of Crile and Brewer, and that Cushing was with him at the end. He is busy. Oxford is full of patients and cadets. Mentions that 12 orthopaedic men are here with Erving of Washington. News of the Historical Section. Singer is in Salonika. Good comments about the latter and his wife. Will send him his list of Incunabula to 1480. Asks him to look over with a critical eye. Mentions his library and his catalogue raisonné. Love to Mrs. McCagg. P.S. Compliments on his Bibliogr. paper.

Letter to Arnold Carl Klebs, January 10, 1912

Letter to Arnold Carl Klebs from William Osler, 13, Norham Gardens, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. Jokes about Klebs' attack of gout. Agrees that Tissot is well worth working up. Mention of the several books he has of him and biographical anecdote. Asks him if he is going to Rome (at the Tuberculosis Congress). Hopes to spend the month of April in Italy. Klebs' book was of great help in his revising of the section on tuberculosis in his text-book. Mention of positive comments from several London men. Request for an old picture and of a modern photograph of an island called Ufenau in Lake Zurich, on which Ulrich von Hutten died. Asks him if he had read the life of von Hutten by Strauss. Asks him to look for Conrad Gesner works for him. Thinks that he is probably the only really respectable Swiss in history. Civilities.

Letter to Arnold Carl Klebs, January 22, 1912

Letter to Arnold Carl Klebs from William Osler, 13, Norham Gardens, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. Delighted with the Ufenau pictures. Answers that yes, he remembers Varro's reference, as Hektoen put it in the front of his article on my System. The book he finds most useful is Bayle's "Biographie Medicale." Comments about it.

Letter to Arnold Carl Klebs, February 5, 1912

Letter to Arnold Carl Klebs from William Osler, 13, Norham Gardens, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. Thanks for the memorandum about Hutten. Details about the many editions of his books. At the Payne's library, he bought Hutten's stirring appeal "Ad Principes Germanos ut Bellum Turcis Inferant", 1518. Would be glad to hear about the monuments. Mentions that he has many Gesner's books and that he is devoted to his memory. Opinion on Von Hutten' life which was not more dissipated than the average man of his period. He is just reading "Epistolas obscororum vivorum." If that is true, it is not surprising that he dedicated his "De Guaiaci" to Archbishop Albert.
