Letter to James William White, September 21, 1914

Letter to James William White from William Osler, 13, Norham Gardens, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. Sorry to be detained here, but it was impossible to leave. The spirit of the country is A-1. Mentions that Grace and Revere sailed on July 30th, but returned on the same steamer. Grace is working eight hours a day on shirts etc. Revere joins the Officer's Training Corps. The big Examination Schools has been converted into an hospital for nearly 500 beds. 67 wounded Germans came in last week, fine looking fellows. Comments on the bullet wounds which are trivial, but the shrapnel ones are horrid. Sends him a lecture that he gives at military camp on the typhoid. Informs him that they are getting a group of Louvain professors, among them is Denys, the bacteriologist and his wife. They tell a gruesome tale. Asks him to send some of his reprints, White's operation and Operation per se. Jokes about the fact that he do not want the catalogue of the Bibliotheca Osleriana without his name in it. Asks him some early papers of Hayes Agnew. The complete collection will go to McGill. Civilities.

Letter to James William White, September 16, 1910

Letter to James William White from William Osler, 13, Norham Gardens, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. Forgot to ask him about a rumor heard from Mrs. Montgomery Sears from Boston, an old friend of Henry James. She said that he was financially embarrassed. Asks him if he knew anything about it. Henry James Junior never mentioned anything and when he saw the James at the Garlant's Hotel they seemed very comfortable. Embarrassed because he charged them the ordinary English mileage fee, knowing nothing of their problems.

Letter to James William White, September 15, 1910

Letter to James William White from William Osler, 13, Norham Gardens, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. States that it was not von Sch who told him that White had thoughts of resigning, he heard it from one or two young surgeons (not Fraser) when they were in Oxford a few months ago. Would deplore any rumpus after such a long and devoted service. His opinion is that even though he is popular with the class, for a Professor of Surgery not to operate and not to be in the arena with the younger men, is an anomaly that no doubt is what some of them feel. Enjoyed seeing him and his wife yesterday. Civilities. P.S. Asks news of Mrs. Abbey who has a curious condition.

Letter to James William White, October 28, 1914

Letter to James William White from William Osler, 13, Norham Gardens, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. Thanks. They have enough now, as the Rockefeller Foundation offer to help the five or six Belgian science professors at Oxford. They are hearing of new ones everyday, and they are twenty at Cambridge. Positive comments on the climate and the recruiting. The wounded are pouring in, but the hospitals are doing well. In Oxford, they have had 800 cases, and only one death, from tetanus. Surprised by the modern bullets which do not cause that much damage. He is trying to stir up the anti-typhoid inoculation. Anecdote on one of his address on an open air meeting at the King Edward Horse camp. Word about the "anti's" (people against the inoculation).
