Quebec regional food research

The subseries are composed primarily of ephemera and research notes collected or created during Julian Armstrong travels in various Quebec regions during research food and foodways. The earliest file is from her 1986 trip to Jonquière for a French language immersion experience, to which she credits her inspiration to travel Quebec regions for research. Files include brochures about and/or published in various regions in Quebec, largely related to agro-tourism and food production; business cards and pamphlets from restaurants, bakeries, and food producers; correspondence with chefs and proprietors, often with recipes attached; clippings; and Armstrong's travel or itinerary notes. Some of the largest files are related to Charlevoix, the Eastern Townships, Lanaudière, and Gaspé.

Album and realia

This subseries consists of one volume and two objects. The volume is a photo album with brown covers and plastified adhesive pages containing a collection of clippings, photographs and other documents. It is titled "The life and times of Roy Wellington States, volume II". There is no corresponding "volume I" which is explicitly labeled as such in the collection. The two objects are a framed certificate, signed by Governor General of Canada Jules Léger, which accompanied the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal presented to States, and an engraved brass plaque, mounted on wood, presented to States by the National Black Coalition of Canada.

Canadian newspapers

This subseries consists of Canadian newspapers primarily from the 1970s collected by Roy States, including 45 issues of Contrast (between Sept. 16, 1970 and Nov. 8, 1979), 16 issues of Oracle (between Nov. 4, 1976 and May 19, 1977), scattered issues of Uhuru, The Black voice, Ebony Express, Atlantic Black journal, Grasp, The Islander, and some single issues, including of Black Labour, Bulletin Maison d'Haiti, and others.

Personal correspondence

The personal correspondence subseries includes letters of a non-literary nature with Morrissey’s family and friends. Included here are letters from Morrissey’s brother, John R. Morrissey; correspondence between Morrissey and his mother, Hilda Nichols; a correspondence between Morrissey and Pat McCarty and Sally McKenzie; a twenty-four year correspondence between Morrissey and R.R. Skinner; a correspondence between Morrissey and Hilde and Dennis Johnson; greeting cards and other letters. Box 22 contains business correspondence and miscellaneous letters.

Literary correspondence

The subseries contains literary correspondence, including exchanges of letters between Morrissey and, among others, Louis Dudek, Northrop Frye, George Johnston, Cid Corman, Clayton Eshleman, Barry Dempster, Guy Birchard, Ken Norris, Endre Farkas, Beth Jankola, Keitha MacIntosh and others. Also included are Morrissey’s correspondence with The Canada Council; C.B.C. radio; The Public Lending Rights; CanCopy (AccessCanada); literary presses and literary magazines. Correspondence pertaining to the two literary magazines Morrissey edited, what is (1973-1976) and The Montreal Journal of Poetics (1978-1985) are also included. Some folders contain original manuscripts of poetry submissions, manuscripts of book reviews (for instance, to Poetry Canada Review and Canadian Literature), essays by Morrissey, and letters organizing poetry-reading tours to Memorial University of Newfoundland, University of Ottawa, University of British Columbia, and Simon Fraser University.

Food research subject files

The second subseries contains research materials, notes, correspondence, conference presentations, ephemeral publications, etc. on specific topics, such as "Maple Syrup Pie" and "Cheese" or from particular conferences or events (such as "Culinary Historians Conference, May 2009"). The subseries also contains research materials related to diet and health topics, such as "Nutritionists," "Omega-3s," and "Salmonella."

Loose materials

This subseries consists of assorted documents pertaining to the life and work of Roy States. When the Roy States collection was donated to Rare Books and Special Collections, many of the ephemeral materials were initially placed into individual envelopes or folders, were given individual identification codes, and were listed in the printed finding aid for the collection. In a later processing stage, the envelopes whose contents related most directly to States were assembled into a group and housed in a dedicated box. These reboxed materials now form subseries 02 of Series A. A particularly important biographical item in the subseries is the "Resumé of experience and activity" binder which States complied.

Mordecai Richler correspondence

Subseries consists of letters from Richler to Weintraub written between 1951 and 1971 (210 letters) and from Weintraub to Richler written between 1951 and 1972 (123 letters).

Brian Moore correspondence
