Correspondence

This series consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence between Stephen Scobie and others. The files include personal correspondence between Scobie and friends and acquaintances, correspondence regarding business matters between Scobie and various publishers and editors, correspondence with governmental bodies regarding grant applications, and correspondence with universities and other organizations regarding planning for lectures and events. As noted in the file listing, some letters include attached copies of drafts for essays or reviews by Scobie, of which there may be duplicates in Series 4, Non-fiction. Some files within Series 3, 4, and 5 also contain correspondence, which were not separated to preserve original order. The series is mostly located within Container 1, with some files in Containers 3, 4 and 5.

Fiction and drama

This series consists mainly of short stories, both handwritten and typed, by Stephen Scobie. The files include early drafts of novels and published and unpublished short stories, as well as a libretto, early notes for an opera and unproduced film scripts. The creator for most of the records in this series was Stephen Scobie. The series is located within Container 4 and 5.

Non-fiction

This series consists of textual documents related to Stephen Scobie’s non-fiction published materials. This includes drafts of his essay on Gertrude Stein, drafts of his book Amorce: The Always Already including notes and drafts and typescripts of his book on bpNichol. The series also includes various drafts of his book on Leonard Cohen some of which include editor’s notes and comments. There is some correspondence and drafts related to a number of miscellaneous critical writings including correspondence and agreements with various publishers. The Leonard Cohen material includes incoming and outgoing correspondence of Scobie with his publishers. The Cohen correspondence files are a mixture of handwritten and typed and include royalty agreements, book sale receipts and book reviews. The series is mostly located in Container 2, with some files in Container 1.

Poetry

The poetry series consists of textual documents related to Stephen Scobie’s work as a poet. This includes drafts of individual poems, drafts and manuscripts of Scobie’s collected and published works, and editorial notes, in a mixture of typed and handwritten. The series also includes reviews of Scobie’s published poetry collections, correspondence concerning publications and/or performances, advertisements for performances, and publications that featured Scobie’s poetry. Stephen Scobie was the creator of the majority of the records in this series, other creators are only included with written reviews or correspondence. The series is mostly located in Container 3, with some files within Container 4 and 5.

The fonds consists of Scobie’s personal records relating to his career as a prominent author, poet and critic in Canada between 1966 and 1989. The bulk of the records consists of his written materials; manuscripts and drafts of published and unpublished poetry, novels, short stories, critical writings, including annotated drafts of his books on bpNichol and Leonard Cohen, as well as various notes, both typed and handwritten, unproduced film scripts and a libretto. The files also include some peripheral and administrative documents relating to his publications, such as book sales receipts, royalty agreements, and reviews, as well as promotional materials relating to lectures, poetry readings and other events. Other materials include correspondence between Scobie and friends, publishers, and other organizations and individuals, as well as selected editions of White Pelican, a literary journal that Scobie edited, from 1971-1973.

Collected Publications

This series consists of selected editions of literary magazine White Pelican and Maclean's magazine. This series also includes collected poetry which was published by White Pelican. Stephen Scobie was not the creator for the records in this series. The series is mostly located in Container 5 with a file in Container 4.
