Research Notebooks, 1927-1957

Series A contains Dr. Elliott’s research notebooks from his association with Selwyn College, Cambridge, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Montreal Neurological Institute. Some of this research was collaborative. Most of the series comprises research relating to the study of brain trauma as a result of head injury or neurosurgery.
This series is divided into three (3) sub-series:
A/1) Research (experiment) notebooks, 1927-1933
A/2) Research (experiment) notebooks, 1933-1949
A/3) Research (experiment) notebooks, 1944-1957

Research (experiment) notebooks.

Sub-series A-2 contains experiment notebooks from the Graduate School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, concerning the measurement of peroxidase activity of animal tissues, the activity of the “succinoxidase system” and the effects of redox indicator dyes on metabolism. Includes experiments related to the aerobic and anaerobic metabolism of glucose, lactate, pyruvate and succinate by slices of tumor tissues using manometric, analytical and isolation procedures. This sub-series comprises 29 files (files nos. 5 to 33), which are arranged chronologically.

Research (experiment) notebooks.

Sub-series A-3 contains experiment notebooks from the Montreal Neurological Institute, concerning experiments on brain swelling as a result of head injury and neurosurgery. Brain slices were examined to determine the effect of aerobic and anaerobic metabolism of electrolytes, pH, oxygen tension, narcotics and convulsants. Of special relevance is the experiment measuring the acetylcholine (Ach) content of cat and rat brains. This sub-series is comprised of 14 files (files nos. 34 to 47), which are arranged chronologically.

GABA Studies

Series B contains EKG and EEG studies for Dr. Herbert Jasper pertaining to gamma-amino-butyric acid. This series is comprised of 3 files (nos. 48 to 50), which are arranged chronologically.

Correspondence – American, Canadian, British and South African associations of Scientific Workers

Series C contains Dr. Elliott’s correspondence relating to his involvement with American, Canadian, British and South African associations of scientific workers. This series includes newspaper clippings, research notes, drafts and typescripts of speeches and publications for the various associations. This series is comprised of 25 files (nos. 51 to 75).

Correspondence.

Sub-series D-1 contains correspondence of Dr. Elliott concerning topics of various natures. This sub-series includes research notes, newspaper clippings, manuscripts, and typescripts of speeches. This sub-series is comprised of 48 files (nos. 76 to 133), which are arranged alphabetically.

Correspondence Files, 1936-1986

Series D contains correspondence concerning topics of Dr. Elliott’s professional interest.
This series is divided into two (2) sub-series:
D/1) Correspondence, 1944-1986
D/2) General correspondence, 1936-1985

General correspondence.

Sub-series D-2 contains correspondence of Dr. Elliott relating to various topics. Of special importance is the correspondence with Baxter Laboratories concerning “Elliott’s B solution”. This sub-series includes a portion of Dr. Elliott’s lecture notes for courses taught on Biochemistry. This sub-series also includes some files relating to Dr. Elliott’s “Unorthodox Career”. This sub-series is comprised of 22 files (nos. 134 to 145).

Teaching files, 1903-1982

Series E contains course seminar notes, copies of exams, lectures notes and correspondence. Dr. Elliott’s recommendations for students and colleagues and his academic certificates and awards are included in this series. Correspondence relating to Dr. Elliott’s visits to certain countries to teach is also included. This sub-series is comprised of 22 files (nos. 146 to 180).

Slides used for neurochemistry lectures

Series F contains slides concerning the examination of brain swelling, acetylcholine experiments, gamma amino butyric acid experiments, as well as other research projects. All slides were used for lectures presented for the Montreal Neurological Institute and the Department of Biochemistry, McGill University, and the University of Pennsylvania. This sub-series is comprised of 22 files (no. 181 to 200).
