Clippings

File includes clippings originally inserted into the album containing the manuscript of Two Newcastle Apprentices. Clippings are from The Oeconomist : or, Englishman's Magazine (1798) and book sale catalogues, and unidentified newspapers. Several clippings relate to the Newcastle races (1774, 1785, 1804, 1793, 1795). One item is a pamphlet of resolutions from the Committee of the Newcastle upon Tyne Society for Promoting the Gradual Abolition of Slavery throughout the British Dominions (1824). Also included is handwritten document with an envelope, dated 1868; envelope with note: "Mr. Woodman's notes on Clennell" (Bewick's pupil Luke Clennell).

XXIV, no. 5 (September 1882).

File consists of album with manuscript of Crawhall's "Memoranda relating to Thomas Bewick & his works." The manuscript contains many newspaper clippings and figures tipped in, as well as letters and other material, such as pages from book catalogues, laid in.

Natural History Society of Northumberland, Durham, and Newcastle-upon-Tyne

File consists of published report for 1888-1889 from the Natural History Society of Northumberland, Durham, and Newcastle-upon-Tyne annual meeting, 12 July 1889, bound in blue paper wrappers. Note on cover indicates that the report was sent to Crawhall on 24 March 1890 after a letter of his was published in the Newcastle Journal. A clipping of the letter is pasted on the front cover. A letter from the Natural History Society to Crawhall is tipped in on inside cover.

Notebook

File consists of one notebook containing notes, clippings, and copies of letters and letters received tipped in regarding Bewick. Manuscript cover title "Thomas Bewick" in Joseph Crawhall's hand. Note on first page reads: "November 1881. About this time several 'memoirs'' - 'notices' etc. of Thomas Bewick & his works were advertised to be 'shortly published' in London and elsewhere. Consequent I imagine on the 'Bewick Exhibition' held in London last year - and the following correspondence relating to him and his works arose from such intended publications. Joseph Crawhall, Nov. 1881."

File consists of one limp paperbound notebook with manuscript notes, clippings of woodcut images and figures pasted in, and annotated clippings from published books pasted in, likely comprising a manuscript being prepared for publication. Manuscript relates to the Scottish sword dancing. Includes Crawhall's woodblock print of the sword dancers.

The second section (leaves 1-80) is titled "Memoranda relating to Robert Johnson, pupil of Beilby & Bewick." Figures and illustrations are tipped in to indicate where they should be positioned in the book.
