Bewick ephemera

Series consists of ephemera relating to Bewick and his life, including articles and clippings, short biographical pieces, and postcards and products featuring Bewick's work. The ephemera includes commercially-produced items and packaging featuring Bewick engravings, such as wrapping paper and wine labels, and ephemera relating to his place of birth or with his name (for example, matchbooks). One file consists of postcards with watercolours, engravings, and other English scenes. The series also contains a DVD of a film on Thomas Bewick's life written and narrated by Iain Bain. Two files contain clippings and photocopies of articles relating to Bewick; one is a 19th-century clipping originally found by Geraldine Cole between two pages of one of Bewick's volumes previously in her possession. The last file (20) contains 4 original letters from Thomas Bewick to various correspondents, dating between 1813 to 1825. This file also includes a letter on amourning stationery from Isabella Bewick (1881), another 1881 letter from Robert Robinson regarding Bewick cuts, and an 1818 receipt of sale for Esop's Fables.

Bewick Society

File related to the Bewick Society and the Coles' membership, including yearly membership cards, annual general meeting agendas and reports, the Society's constitution, event programmes, correspondence with Society secretary and other members, and other ephemera related to Society events.

Cards and keepsakes

Includes fine printed cards, keepsakes, invitations, and announcements from the Book Club of California, the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco, friends of the Cole family, the Lands End Press, and printer Eric Holub.

Catalogues and bookseller descriptions

Series consists of bookseller descriptions and catalogue clippings of Bewick works (generally with the catalogue cover appended to a loose page on which Bewick item appears). One folder contains numerous bookseller descriptions printed from internet sale listings. Some items have accompanying correspondence or Geraldine Cole's notes and annotations regarding purchase inquiries. The series also contains a listing of all the items in the Cole-Bewick Collection sold to McGill Library and three spiral-bound volumes containing bibliographic citations and some notes on all the items in the Cole-Bewick Collection in alphabetical order.

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence regarding collecting and general correspondence. Incoming correspondence to Geraldine Cole from booksellers, often with accompanying materials, friends, librarians, printers, and fellow collectors and book enthusiasts. Includes some correspondence from charitable organizations soliciting donations, including the Thomas Bewick Birthplace Appeal. Letters are mostly originals, with some printed emails. Consists primarily of incoming correspondence, with some drafts of outgoing correspondence. One file consists of substantial correspondence with John Borden, including many appended photocopied articles and book descriptions.

Series consists of various examples of modern fine printing using engravings of Bewick's. Most of the items are image proofs or printed keepsakes from printers such as Havilah Press, Anchor and Acorn Press, Eric Holub, and Gordon Williams. One file contains private press book prospectuses. Also included in the series is a 19th-century printing of a silhouette cut by Thomas Bewick.

Fonds consists chiefly of ephemera and correspondence relating to the work of wood engravers of Thomas and John Bewick of Newcastle, England, in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The ephemera found in series 1 includes various examples of fine printing, including proofs and printed keepsakes featuring Bewick engravings from printers such as Havilah Press and Anchor and Acorn Press. Series 2 contains correspondence, chiefly between Geraldine Cole and booksellers, as well as general correspondence with friends and acquaintances. Series 3 consists primarily of bookseller descriptions and clippings and excerpts from catalogues describing Bewick works (generally with the catalogue cover appended to a loose page on which a Bewick item appears). Some are with accompanying correspondence. Also included in this series are documents listing all of the items found in the Cole-Bewick Collection at McGill Library. Series 4 consists of other ephemera related to Bewick and his life, including short biographical pieces, postcards and products featuring Bewick engravings and watercolours, and articles and clippings. The last file in this series contains 4 original letters from Thomas Bewick to various correspondents, dating between 1819 to 1825. Series 5 contains a number of subject files relate to specific projects or organizations, including the Bewick Society.

Grolier Club

Includes handwritten notes dated 1985, annotated photocopies of Bewick engravings, and informational plaque from 2002-2003 exhibition at the Grolier Club.

Joanne Sonnichsen

File contains materials related to bookbinder Joanne Sonnichsen's binding for John Borden, Thomas Bewick & The Fables of Aesop (San Francisco, 1983), carried out in 1997, as well as excerpts from a talk and a newsletter piece about fine binding and the Bewick project in particular. Also includes a letter to Geraldine and Jerry Cole as well as a copy of The Private Library vol. 10, no. 3 (Autumn 1997) with Joanne Sonnichsen's article, "Bewick in Bas Relief."
