Letter from Chief Secretary Murdoch to Hertel de Rouville, dated Montreal, 4th Mar. 1840. Letter concerns his application for indemnity for losses during the rebellions, stating that "His Excellency feels himself precluded from paying the amounts awarded by the Commissioners. His Excellency has great satisfaction however in stating that the Report of the Commissioners entirely relieves you from any imputation of disloyalty, and on the contrary, recognizes in distinct terms the services rendered by you to Her Majesty's Troops."

The letter reports that the documents had been placed with Mr. Clark as a Commissioners of Indemnity.

Letter from Chief Secretary Murdoch to Hertel de Rouville, dated Government House, Montreal, 20 Decr. 1840. Letter rejects Hertel de Rouville's proposals that he be furnished with an authenticated certificate of the award granted by the Commissioners with the promise that he shall be paid as soon as possible, or that he be compensated from the military chest, since the government had indicated that it was impossible to pay the indemnity out of the funds of the province.

Letter concerns his request for return of certain correspondence relative to half pay claim as well as a copy of the Commissioners' report. Murdoch reports that the letters were "not of record in the Government Office," and adds that the report does not contain any mention of half pay claims.

Fonds consists primarily of correspondence between Hertel de Rouville and members of the Canadian government, including Chief Secretary of Lower Canada Sir Thomas William Clinton Murdoch (1809-1891) and Governors General Lord Gosford and Charles Bagot, regarding financial losses he incurred during the rebellions of 1837, 1838, and 1839, and half-pay claims dating from his time as captain of the Canadian Voltigeurs during the War of 1812. Also included are five envelopes with wax seals intact.
