Dr. Benjamin Hinde was a 19th-century British military surgeon, amateur naturalist, and field observer who made a niche but highly significant contribution to ornithology and biological chemistry. Serving as the Principal Medical Officer on the British military staff at Bathurst (modern-day Banjul) in The Gambia during the 1860s, he is best remembered for his field observations that led to the discovery of turacin, a unique copper-based animal pigment.
