        History

John Charles Allison Heriot was born on December 3, 1862, in Georgeville, Quebec.

He was educated at Stanstead Academy, then he came to Montreal and obtained a position as an articling student in the office of Alexander F. Dunlop and later becoming a junior partner there before moving to New York State to attend Cornell University’s School of Architecture. He began his architectural career in Albany, N.Y. where he joined the busy office of Isaac Perry, the Supervising Architect who had been commissioned to complete the work on the Albany State Capitol. After two years working under Perry, he moved to New York City where he was employed in the office of Robert H. Robertson (Robertson & Potter), and, more significantly, he spent a two-year period with the talented New York architect and designer Arnold Brunner (Brunner & Tryon, Architects).

After his return to Montreal in 1893, he formed a partnership with A. F. Dunlop, Dunlop & Heriot (1893 to 1895). In 1896, he joined with David R. Brown and Donald MacVicar and they created the firm Brown, MacVicar & Heriot (1896 to 1897). In 1898, Brown departed, leaving MacVicar and Heriot to start a new firm MacVicar & Heriot (1898 to 1921).

In 1917, he married Beatrice Mary Smith. He died on in 1921, in Montreal, Quebec.
