History
Harry Harris was a prominent American ornithologist. He was born in Moberly, Missouri, on April 17, 1878. After receiving his education at the University of Michigan and Washington College in St. Louis, Missouri, he worked as a commercial artist and then as a cashier in the Kansas City Post Office, when his father was postmaster for the city.
According to the Cooper Ornithological Club history, he moved to California around 1924. He served as curator of the library of vertebrate zoology at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.
Harris was interested in ornithology from an early age, as demonstrated through his life membership in the American Ornithologists' Union. He was also a member of the Wilson Ornithological Club, the St. Louis Academy of Science, and the Cooper Ornithological Society, serving as the latter's President of the Southern Division and its business manager.
Harris lived at the end of his life at Eagle Rock in the Ballona Creek watershed, part of Los Angeles, California. He was particularly interested in the California condor.
