        History

        Nicolai Hanson was a Norwegian zoologist and Antarctic explorer. He took part in Carsten Borchgrevink’s Southern Cross Expedition and died during the journey, becoming the first person to be buried on the Antarctic continent. Afterward, his father, Anton Hanson (1836-1917), translated his son’s diary, and this translation became one of the most important scientific contributions to the expedition’s natural history research.
