        History

Edward Halkyard was a British naturalist and microscopist who made important contributions to the study of foraminifera, which are tiny, single-celled marine organisms with shells. He was born in Lancashire, England. Because of health problems, he spent winters in warmer places, where he began studying marine life in areas like the Mediterranean. This work led to his studies of the Recent foraminifera of Jersey (Halkyard, 1889) and, after his death, to his research on the Eocene of Biarritz (Halkyard, 1919, edited by Heron-Allen and Earland, with biographical notes). His collection is now held at the Manchester Museum.
