        History

        William Henry Green was born on January 27, 1824, in Groveville, Burlington County New Jersey.

        He was a Presbyterian clergyman, educator, and author. In 1840, he graduated from Lafayette College and in 1846, from Princeton Theological Seminary where he was an instructor in the Hebrew language from 1846 to 1849. He was ordained in 1848 and became pastor of the Central Presbyterian church of Philadelphia from 1849 to 1851. From 1851 until his death in 1900, he was a professor of Biblical and Oriental Literature at Princeton Theological Seminary. Green was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1863. He was the author of the book "Grammar of the Hebrew Language" (1861, rev. 1888). He was the scholarly leader of the orthodox wing of American Presbyterianism and was the moderator of the General Assembly of 1891. He was also a chairman of the Old Testament committee of the Anglo-American Bible revision committee.

        In 1858, he married Elizabeth Hayes (1831–1901). He died on February 10, 1900, in Princeton, New Jersey.
