History

Harrold E. Gillingham was a Philadelpjia insurance broker and an enthusiastic collector. His collections included nautical instruments, manuscripts, and especially medals and awards of all sorts. He became one of the foremost American historians of gold and silver smith work, writing many books and articles about medals and awards from all over the world. He served as treasurer of the American Numismatic Society and held several offices with the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society of Philadelphia. In 1930 he sold his collection of 4000 orders of chivalry and war medals.
