John Wickham Flower, Esq, was born on August 11, 1807, in London, England.
He was a British naturalist, geologist, paleontologist, and author. He was shaped by his education in Cambridgeshire, where a love for classical literature took root and flourished throughout his life. His curiosity led him to study archaeology and natural history, but it was geology that truly captured his imagination. Driven by relentless enthusiasm, he spared no effort or expense in expanding his collections. He ventured along the dramatic tertiary cliffs of Hampshire, where his keen eye uncovered the remarkable jaw of an alligator at Hordwell. His explorations extended to the Brickearth beds of Grays, yielding further treasures. In pursuit of discovery, he journeyed to Moreton Bay, Australia, gathering an exceptional array of land, freshwater, and marine mollusca, many previously unknown in his homeland. He was the author of numerous articles published in various geological and anthropological journals.
He died on April 11, 1873, in Croydon, England.
