Colonel James Henry Ewart, frequently referred to as Major J. H. Ewart during his service in West Africa, joined the 78th Highlanders in 1868 and saw military service in Canada, Afghanistan, and Egypt before retiring from regular army duty in 1882. In 1890, he was appointed commander of the Royal Niger Company's Constabulary, and two years later became Travelling (or District) Commissioner for the Colony of Lagos. Throughout the 1890s, he undertook extensive surveys and explorations across the Niger region and the West African coast.
Beyond his military and administrative responsibilities, Ewart made significant contributions to scholarly knowledge through his observations and specimen collections in the West African interior. His work provided valuable information to contemporary geographical societies and played an important role in late nineteenth-century ornithological studies of African birdlife.
Ewart is buried in Perth (Jeanfield and Wellshill) Cemetery in the United Kingdom. He is commemorated there for his leadership of the Seaforth and Cameron Territorial (Reserve) Brigade, a command he held prior to his death during World War I.
