History

William Elder was born in 1840, in Hantsport, Nova Scotia.

He was a professor. In 1859, he graduated from the Normal School in Truro, Nova Scotia and spent several years teaching. He then studied chemistry and natural sciences at the Acadia University, Wolfville, Nova Scotia (M.A., 1868) and in 1869, he became its professor of natural sciences. He later continued his studies at Harvard University and in 1873, he taught geology and chemistry at Colby University, Waterville, Maine where he also conducted Bible classes. In 1885, he became a Chair of the Chemistry department.

In 1879, he married Caroline Scammen of Waterville, Maine (1840-?). He died on June 25, 1905, in Waterville, Kennebec, Maine.
