        History

Dennis Duffy was born in 1938 in Illinois, USA.

He is a Canadian novelist, essayist, literary critic, and educator. He studied at the University of Toronto (M.A., 1962; Ph.D.; 1964) and served as a principal of Innis College, University of Toronto, until 1984, but worked there until 2000. There he established the Mary Ann Duffy Award, named after his late wife, to honour student volunteerism. In 2001, he helped found the Vic One program for first-year students at Victoria College, where he serves as a Professor Emeritus of English. His post-retirement energies in the Vic One program made him a co-winner of the Northrop Frye Award for combining teaching with research. He contributes reviews to the Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and the New York Times and is a frequent CBC commentator on literature and the arts. He published "Marshall McLuhan" (1969), "Gardens, Covenants, Exiles: Loyalism in the Literature of Upper Canada/Ontario" (1981), "Sounding the Iceberg: an Essay on Canadian Historical Novels" (1986), "A Tale of Sad Reality: John Richardson's Wacousta" (1993), and "Evergreen Playland: Road Trip Through British Columbia" (2008).
