History

Doubleday, Page & Company was an American publishing house established in 1897 as Doubleday & McClure Company by Frank Nelson Doubleday and Samuel S. McClure. In 1900, Walter Hines Page joined the company as a partner, and it was renamed Doubleday, Page & Company. Over the years, the company merged with several other publishers. In 1927, it merged with the George H. Doran Company to form Doubleday, Doran and Company. In 1946, the company was renamed Doubleday and Company.

In 1986, Doubleday was sold to Bertelsmann, and in 1998, it became part of Random House. In 2009, Doubleday merged with the Knopf Publishing Group, creating the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. Finally, in 2013, Random House and Penguin merged to form Penguin Random House, with Doubleday remaining a part of the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group.
