      History

      Basile Riel dit l'Irlande was a voyageur and guide who lived in La Prairie, Quebec. He was born in approximately 1720, the son of Jean Baptiste Riel dit l'Irlande and Marie -Louise Cottu. He was an ancestor of famous Métis leaders Louis Riel Sr. (1817-1864) and Louis Riel Jr. (1844-1885), who were descended from his brother, Jacques Michel Riel dit L'Irlande. He died in La Prairie on 6 May 1805.
