History
Rev. Dr. James Francis Dickie was born on November 13, 1845, in Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland.
He was a Presbyterian clergyman and author. He was educated in Glasgow and Edinburgh Universities in Scotland. In 1872, he was inducted into the position of pastor of St. Andrews Church in Kitchener (then called Berlin), Waterloo Region, Ontario, a large settlement of residents of German origin. It was here that Dickie acquired an interest in German life and language. In the late 1870s, he accepted a call to the Central Presbyterian Church in Detroit, Michigan. In 1884, he was appointed minister to the American and British Church in Nollendorf Platz, Berlin, Germany where he stayed until his retirement in 1924. He wrote the books "In the Kaiser's Capital" (1910), "Germany" (1912), and "Seven Christmas Trees" (1930).
In 1875, he married Louise Beck (1847–1927) and in 1927, he married Grace MacKenzie (1863–1933). He died on May 28, 1933, in Marine City, St. Clair, Michigan.
