Davis, Robert. N.

Robert N. Davis was a leading museum curator and natural historian who served as Science Curator and later Director of the Everhart Museum of Natural History, Science, and Art in Scranton, Pennsylvania, during the 1910s. After the death of the museum’s founder, Dr. Isaiah Fawkes Everhart, in 1911, Davis assumed responsibility for managing and expanding the institution’s natural history collections, overseeing a period of substantial growth and development.

In 1915, he published the Illustrated and Annotated Catalog of the Insects and Butterflies of Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, an important reference work that documented the region’s insect diversity and served as a valuable resource for local naturalists. Under Davis’s leadership, the museum’s collections expanded dramatically throughout the decade. By 1920, its holdings included more than 2,300 bird specimens, 25,000 shells, 2,100 plant specimens, and extensive collections of mammals, reptiles, minerals, and other natural history materials.

Davis’s efforts to broaden the museum’s scientific scope culminated in a landmark expedition to Panama in 1921. Supported by funding from Colonel L. A. Watres, he led a three-month collecting venture that yielded thousands of tropical plant, insect, and animal specimens. The expedition significantly enriched the museum’s collections and helped extend its focus beyond regional natural history to include a wider representation of global biodiversity.
