History
Charles Danford, a wealthy independent traveller and amateur ornithologist, organized scientific trips to collect specimens for his collection back in London. In the 1870s, Danford shipped thousands of birds acquired during his Ottoman Turkey expeditions back to England. The shipments included a valuable bald ibis from the town of Birecik, which had been shot despite the residents’ resistance, as the bird held spiritual importance and was considered sacred.
