Cros, Auguste

Dr. Auguste Cros was a distinguished French military physician and entomologist who lived and conducted much of his scientific work in Mascara, Algeria, during the early twentieth century. Internationally recognized for his expertise in insect biology, behaviour, and larval development, he made some of his most significant contributions during the 1920s and 1930s. Drawing on both his medical background and extensive field research, he also investigated the effects of domestic and medically important pests, such as cockroaches, on local communities and infrastructure.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the study of North African insects, the Entomological Society of France awarded him the prestigious Prix Passet in 1918. He was also an active participant in the Sixth International Congress of Entomology, held in Madrid in 1935. Through extensive collecting activities in and around Mascara, Cros generated a wealth of specimens that are now represented in museum collections throughout Europe and North America, many bearing the historical label “Mascara, Algérie, ex Dr. Cros.”

Widely regarded as a leading authority on the beetle family Meloidae, commonly known as blister beetles, Dr. Cros published numerous influential scientific papers through organizations such as the Société entomologique de France and the Bulletin de la Société d'Histoire Naturelle de l'Afrique du Nord. His research left a lasting legacy in entomology and continues to serve as an important resource for the study of North African insect fauna.
