History
Rev. Joseph Hart Clinch was born on January 30, 1806, in Newfoundland, Canada.
He was a clergyman, honorary Doctor of Sacred Theology (Columbia College), poet, and author of many hymns and sermons published in the Boston Musical Gazette, The New Yorker, Christian Work: Illustrated Family Newspaper and many other publications. He received his college education at King's College, Windsor, Nova Scotia, and was ordained in 1829. In 1836, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts where he became a rector of St. Matthew's Church, South Boston (1838 to 1860). He also served as a Chaplain to the House of Correction and Lunatic Hospital in Boston. In 1840, he published a collection of poems "The Captivity in Babylon, and Other Poems”. In the 1880s, he served as a Secretary of the Annual Conventions of the Diocese of Massachusetts.
In 1831, he married Griselda Eastwick Cunningham (1810–1873). He died on July 5, 1884, in Boston, Massachusetts.
