History

Richard Henry Brown was born on November 12, 1837, in London, England.

He was a civil and mining engineer and the first elected Mayor of Sydney Mines. He studied at Harvard University from 1860 to 1861 and returned to Sydney where he succeeded his father as General Manager of the General Mining Association, retiring in 1901. He was also an amateur photographer and artist.

In 1864, he married Barbara Purves Davison (1842-1898). He died on February 9, 1920, in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
