        History

Arthur Basil Brooke was an Irish-born naturalist, traveller, and Fellow of the Zoological Society (F.Z.S.) who made several notable contributions to zoology and ornithology during the 1870s. He was the younger brother of Sir Victor Alexander Brooke, another prominent 19th-century naturalist and deer expert. Early in 1871, Brooke frequently travelled around Sardinia to collect natural history specimens. In 1873, he published a landmark, multi-part series of scientific papers titled "Notes on the Ornithology of Sardinia" in the prestigious bird journal The Ibis. Modern conservation papers still quote his 1870s observations to track historical population trends of regional wildlife like the Red Kite and Peregrine Falcon. He kept extensive field journals tracking local fauna. He regularly wrote updates for The Zoologist, detailing wildlife data such as the breeding and migration habits of birds in the Irish countryside.
