        History

        Edwin Bicknell was born on September 12, 1829, in Turner, Androscoggin, Maine.

        He enlisted in the U.S. Union Army during the Civil War and served from 1861 to 1865. He was a student of Louis Agassiz, a Swiss-born American biologist, geologist, and professor of zoology and geology at Harvard University. In the 1870s, Bicknell published articles in The Monthly Microscopical Journal.

        He died on March 19, 1877, in Lynn, Essex Country, Massachusetts.
