Fred A. Barratt collected specimens in the Transvaal region of South Africa during the 19th century. He is known for sending bird specimens to major institutions, such as the Natural History Museum in London. There, English ornithologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe described a warbler species in 1874 (Bradypterus barratti).
