        History

Henry F. Ansell was an English merchant active in the Gabon during the 1870 who traded and collected natural history specimens. While often associated with zoological discoveries, he was primarily a trader rather than a professional zoologist. His field collection led to the discovery of several birds named in his honour, such as the Gabon Coucal (Centropus anselli, Sharpe, 1874) and a subspecies of the Cloud Cisticola (Cisticola textrix anselli).
