The American Osler Society was founded in 1970 for the purpose of bringing together members of the medical and allied professions with a common interest in memorializing and perpetuating the principles of life and humanism as practiced by Sir William Osler. The first meeting was held in Denver with William B. Bean as president, George T. Harrell vice-president, Thomas M. Durant 2nd vice-president, John P. McGovern secretary, Alfred R. Henderson, treasurer-historian and Edward C. Rosenow, Jr secretary-elect.
Since January 9 1981, the Osler Library has been the official repository for the archives of the American Osler Society. Old accession numbers 643, 588 and 589. Records of the American Osler Society are transferred to the Osler Library Archives annually. All accessions have been processed as of November 2013. Further accruals are expected.
Fonds consists of documents, which illustrate the founding, and the activities of the American Osler Society. Included are the administrative and financial documents, minutes, reports, correspondence of the officers, correspondence with members, files regarding links with other organizations and a survey. The fonds also contains documents related to membership, the annual meeting, the William B. Bean Student Awardship, the John P. McGovern Award Lectureship and publications generated by the association. Fonds contains the following series:
