Burnett, Philip

Philip Burnett, of Montreal, was founder of the first dermatological clinic at the Royal Victoria Hospital in 1904. After attending Clifton College, Bristol, he graduated in medicine from McGill University in 1900 and continued postgraduate training in England, France, Germany and Austria before and after World War I. In 1901 he received the diplomas of L.R.C.P. and M.R.C.S. In 1914 he took an active part in the formation of the No. 6 Field Ambulance Corps and in the following year went overseas with the rank of major. While serving in France he was named consultant dermatologist to the Second Canadian Army. He was promoted to the rank of colonel during the war and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. He was a charter member and the first president of the Montreal Dermatological Society, in 1930-31. In 1942 he retired as dermatologist at the Royal Victoria Hospital and also a professor of clinical dermatology at McGill University, an appointment he had held for many years. Dr. William A. De Wolf Smith graduated in medicine from McGill in 1884 with a M.D.,C.M. degree. He was a surgeon at the B.C. Penitentiary, New Westminster, British Columbia.

Stewart, R. Cameron, 1885-

Dr. R. Cameron Stewart, born in Montreal in 1885, graduated in medicine at McGill University and gained high honours in his course. He took up pediatrics soon after entering practice and was appointed clinical assistant in that department on the staff of the Royal Victoria Hospital under the late Dr. F. M. Fry. He remained a member of this department until his retirement in 1949, reaching the rank of Associate Pediatrician. Dr. Stewart belonged to the vanishing group of physicians practicing internal medicine with a leaning towards pediatrics. His special interest was in the infectious diseases, and he was on the staff of the Alexandra Hospital for Infectious Diseases for many years. Dr. Stewart was Assistant Demonstrator in Pediatrics, 1924-1927, and Demonstrator, 1928-1936 and 1943-1949 at McGill University. He was also Assistant Physician to the Student Health Service, 1946-1949. (Canadian Medical Association Journal v. 72, pg. 59, 1955)

Born in Perth, Ontario, William Bell Malloch was a medical doctor employed by the Hudson's Bay Company from 1869 to 1878. Although stationed at Moose Factory he made trips to other posts whenever his medical expertise was required. Malloch received his M.D.,C.M. from McGill in 1867.

J.H. Evans, an Oxford-trained physician, was a British surgeon specializing in cancer. He knew William Osler, who encouraged his collecting of prints and inspired his early interest in the history of medicine. Evans gathered a collection of medical engravings.

David Leslie Philip was born in Vankleek Hill, Canada East. As a student, he was listed as coming from Brantford, Canada East. He graduated in medicine from McGill in 1861. He was one of the best-known practitioners in the province of Ontario, but owing to a stroke of paralysis, he did not practice for the last two years of his life. (Canada Lancet, v. 38, p. 1128, 1905).
